At the present time more than 78 000 hectares of vineyards are planted and the planted areas are spreading due to planned planting in new regions. A vast majority of all Brazilian vineyards lie in the South in the country of Rio Grande Sul, where there are four out of the five most important areas - Vale dos Vinhedos, Serra Gaúcha, Campos de Cima da Serra and Campanha.
